You can forget the unhappy past: study

On Reuters today:

Researchers have confirmed what common wisdom has long held — that people can suppress emotionally troubling memories — and said on Thursday they have sketched out how the brain accomplishes this.

They said their findings might lead to a way to help patients with post-traumatic stress disorder or anxiety to gain control of debilitating memories.

In the test, parts of each volunteer’s prefrontal cortex — the brain’s control center for complex thoughts and actions — were activated. This seemed to direct a decrease of activity in the visual cortex, where images are usually processed.

The hippocampus, where memories are formed and retrieved, and amygdala, the emotion hub, were later also deactivated.

The article continues on to discuss the possibility of using this technique to reduce the intensity of painful memories or perhaps even block them. The study confirms–at least in part–the theory of repressed/recovered memories. Many people recover memories of past abuse in their later years. There is a certain amount of controversy surrounding this issue since many of the memories are recovered through hypnosis, and could potentially be the result of implanted suggestions. This new study provides some needed credibility to the theory that memories can be repressed and later recovered. Read the rest of this entry »

Silent Energy Drain - Anemia

red blood cells True or False - Anemia is a condition only women have.

False - The fact is, in the USA, the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia is 2% in adult men, 9 to 12% in non-Hispanic white women, and nearly 20% in Black and Mexican-American women.

Blood is actually a liquid made up of several different cell types.  One of the most important and most numerous cell types is the red blood cell.  The purpose of the red blood cell is to deliver oxygen to the body.  Anemia describes the condition in which the number of red blood cells in your blood is low.  For this reason, doctors sometimes describe someone with anemia as having a low blood count.  A person who has anemia is called anemic.

Because a low red blood cell count decreases oxygen delivery to every tissue in the body, anemia causes many signs and symptoms.  It makes almost any other underlying medical condition worse.

How severe the anemia is will determine how severe the signs and symptoms might be, including:

* Black or visibly bloody stools
* Rapid heart rate / breathing
* Pale, cold or jaundiced (yellow) skin
* Fatigue / Weakness
* Chest / Abdominal pain
* Unhealthy Weight loss
* Dizziness and passing out, especially upon standing

Preventing anemia requires several systems in your body.  If your kidneys or bone marrow cells are not working properly, or your body is poorly nourished, then you might not be able to maintain a normal red blood cell count.  Some common forms of anemia are most easily prevented by eating a healthy diet and by limiting alcohol use.  All types of anemia are best avoided by seeing a doctor regularly and when problems arise.

A healthy diet including iron rich foods along with iron supplements can aid in supporting already normal red blood cell levels. Such a diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat free or nonfat milk and milk products, lean meats, fish, dry beans, eggs, nuts, and is low in saturated fat, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars.

In addition to a healthful diet that includes good sources of iron, you can also eat foods that help your body absorb iron better. For example, you can eat a fruit or vegetable that is a good source of vitamin C (see table) with a food or meal that contains non-heme iron (see table). Vitamin C helps your body absorb the non-heme iron foods you eat, especially when the food containing non-heme iron and the vitamin-C rich food are eaten at the same meal.

The two types of dietary iron are known as: Heme Iron is found in animal sources and is highly available for absorption. Non-heme iron on the other hand is found in vegetable sources and is less available.

Pregnant women should consult their health care provider before altering their diet or adding dietary supplements so as to be sure and avoid excessive vitamin A levels.

Video: War zone in Sydney as man goes on rampage with tank!

A man went on a crazy rampage though suburbs of Australia’s largest city, Sydney, in the early hours of the morning local time, taking out infastructure and sending police on a wild chase.

John Robert Patterson, 45, allegedly led officers on a 90-minute chase through six suburbs in Sydney’s west as he crashed the privately-owned APC through fences, mobile phone towers, telecommunication relay sheds and an electrical substation.

The man from Dharruk, in Sydney’s west, was arrested after the APC stalled on its way to damaging a seventh property, police said.

He was refused bail in court.

Defence lawyer Ivan Bertoia told the court that Patterson claimed “that certainly he had authority to behave in such a manner”.

In refusing bail, the magistrate recommended that Patterson, who had facial lacerations and a swollen left eye, receive medical and psychiatric attention.

The hearing was adjourned to local court on July 16.

Mobile phone services where the chase occurred were disrupted while technicians waited to gain entry to the crime scenes, police said.

Police on patrol had noticed the APC allegedly being used to destroy an electricity substation and followed the carrier through the suburbs of Mt Druitt, Dharruk, Emerton, Glendenning and Plumpton.

The pursuit ended in Dean Park when the vehicle stalled as it was being driven towards another mobile phone tower, police said.

Police arrested Patterson and charged him with numerous offences including malicious damage, break, enter and steal, predatory driving, possession of a prohibited drug, use of a weapon to avoid apprehension and driving in a dangerous manner.

Man’s foot smell mistaken for dead bodies.

Not so happy feet.

A case of mistaken smells…

This weekend German police broke into a darkened flat fearing they would find a dead body after neighbours complained of a nasty smell seeping out onto the staircase.

The shutters of the apartment had been closed for more than a week and the postbox was filled with uncollected mail.

But instead of a corpse police found a tenant with badly smelling feet asleep in bed next to a pile of foul-smelling laundry, police in the southwestern town of Kaiserslautern said today.

Wow, that guy must be one hell of a dirty human being.

Girlfriend proves revenge is sweeter the second time. Until your thown in jail.

Yowzers!

Now, this story brings a whole new meaning to the term eye for an eye.

A Hong Kong woman who partly blinded her boyfriends’ eye six years ago has been jailed after poking the other eye with a chopstick.

Po Shiu-fong, 58, accused long-time boyfriend Kwok Wai-ming, 49, of having an affair, and a row quickly erupted.

During the heated arugment, Po stabbed a plastic chopstick into Kwok’s left eye, the same eye she wounded just years earlier.

“Po became hysterical when she saw the wound and mopped it with a towel. The pair then went to bed,” reports said.

“The next morning they had another argument in which she grabbed a chopstick and stabbed Kwok’s right eye.”

Two days later, he sought medical treatment and filed a police report against Po, whom he had dated since 1993.

Apparently he didn’t report the attack six years ago, telling the court his silence was “a love sacrifice.”

“If I forgive her, God would not forgive me,” Kwok was reported as saying. “No matter what, nothing could compensate for the loss of my eye.”

Po was jailed for six months.

Day 2 of the Two Week Total Transformation Challenge

Yesterday, the day started off well with a good interval (running) session at 6:30 in the morning.  Unfortunately, when I got home I found out my wife was sick- possibly with strep throat.  I definitely don’t want to catch that!

Consequently, I spent most of yesterday taking care of her.  As a result I pushed my ab work off to this morning (when I finish typing this) and my full body workout for this afternoon.  Keep your fingers crossed that I don’t get strep.

Diet/testicular cancer

A diet high in dairy products (particularly cheese), luncheon meats, and baked goods increases the risk of testicular cancer according to a report from the Canadian Cancer Registries Epidemiology Research group.

Earlier studies have demonstrated a relationship between milk, meat, cheese and fat intake and testicular cancer. Other known risk factors include cryptorchidism and estrogen exposure in utero.

The authors comment that baked goods often contain milk or milk products, eggs and sugar, which may contribute to the risk.

While testicular cancer is relatively rare the incidence is increasing.
